San Antonio City Facts
The early Payaya Indians of the area called this area Yanaguana which means The Clear Water. Spanish explorers in 1691 discovered the Payaya Indian camp on a gentle river and named the site San Antonio.
The San Antonio Mud Festival is held the first Saturday of January. The festival involves draining the Riverwalk canal, lugging out all the garbage, fixing the pumps and refilling the Riverwalk with water. There is live music, dancing and food in conjunction with the event.
Downtown San Antonio,TX is the site of San Antonio's three oldest Spanish settlements, this area includes the Alamo and other historic sites, along with the River Walk, the Alamodome, the convention center, the Rivercenter Mall, and many high-rise hotels, restaurants, and shops.
